A Spontaneous One-Nighter in Mount Laguna
The thought of planning a camping trip can sometimes feel overwhelming. Where are we going to go? Is there camping available? How’s the weather? What are we going to eat? Are there activities nearby? Since getting our truck camper, each trip has started with these same questions. But then we remind ourselves—this is exactly why we own a truck camper. We don’t need to overcomplicate things. There’s no rush to clean and return it on time, no pressure to plan the perfect itinerary to get our money’s worth. So, we decided to simplify: plan less, do more!
That’s exactly what we did on a recent Saturday morning. At 11:30 AM, we checked the weather in Mount Laguna, set a two-hour departure deadline, and hit the road for a spontaneous one-night camping trip in the Cleveland National Forest. Spoiler alert: it was better than we expected.
Where is Mount Laguna?
Mount Laguna is located about an hour and 20 minutes east of Ocean Beach, yet it still falls within San Diego County. Nestled in the Laguna Mountains on the eastern edge of the Cleveland National Forest, it offers a complete change of scenery from the coast.
We love heading up to Mount Laguna because, in such a short drive, we go from beachside living to a full mountain escape. Unlike the coast, this area experiences all four seasons, making it a go-to for everything from quick hikes to weekend camping trips. We’ve even made day trips just for sledding in the winter (yes, it gets snow!). Whether for a spontaneous overnight stay or a full weekend of exploring, Mount Laguna never disappoints.
Things to Do in Mount Laguna
Hiking & Mountain Biking
Sitting at 6,000 feet above sea level, Mount Laguna boasts a range of activities year-round. It’s most known for its hiking and mountain biking trails. Our go-to app, AllTrails, lists 39 scenic hiking trails and 9 biking trails in the area, offering plenty of options for all skill levels.
Fun fact: The Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) runs through Mount Laguna! While camping at Burnt Rancheria Campground, we hiked along the PCT and saw hikers just starting their long journey north. It’s incredibly inspiring to see these adventurers either beginning or completing their trek, imagining all that they’ve experienced along the way.
Sledding & Winter Activities
During the winter months, Mount Laguna gets snowfall, making it a popular destination for San Diego locals looking for their winter fix. The area offers sledding trails, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. If you visit during peak snow days, expect crowds—so set your expectations accordingly!
Camping in Mount Laguna
For this trip, we camped for free in the Cleveland National Forest. There are a few great dispersed camping spots if you’re comfortable with dry camping. If you’re looking for more amenities, here are some great campground options:
Burnt Rancheria Campground – A well-maintained campground with picnic tables, fire pits, and restrooms. Perfect for families.
Laguna Campground – Great for those wanting easy access to trails and scenic views.
Dispersed Camping in Cleveland National Forest – Ideal for self-sufficient campers looking for a quiet, off-the-grid experience.
Weather in Mount Laguna
According to WeatherSpark.com, “In Laguna, the summers are hot, arid, and mostly clear, while the winters are short, cold, wet, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 39°F to 93°F and is rarely below 30°F or above 102°F.”
The best time to visit for warm-weather activities is mid-June to late September. However, be prepared for bugs in early summer! When we camped in June, the flies were relentless. But when we returned in late September, the weather was perfect. Always check the forecast before heading out!

This last-minute trip reminded us why we love having a truck camper—there was no pressure, no overplanning, just pure adventure. We soaked in the crisp fall air, unplugged from service, and simply enjoyed our time together. Sometimes, the best trips are the ones you barely plan.
