Best Baby & Toddler Carriers for Adventure Travel: Our Honest Review
Over the years, we’ve tested a handful of different carriers to figure out what works best for our adventures—whether we’re hiking, road-tripping, or just exploring a new place. With two kids in tow, having the right carrier has made all the difference in keeping everyone comfortable and happy. Through all the trials these are our top 4 carriers.
- Ergobaby Omni Classic – The ultimate all-around carrier for travel.
- Ergobaby Embrace Knit Newborn Carrier – A cozy and compact choice for newborns.
- Trail Magik – A game-changer for hiking with toddlers.
- Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature – The go-to structured carrier for long hikes and outdoor adventures.
Here’s what we use and love.
1. Ergo Omni Dream Baby Carrier – Our Everyday Go-To
The Omni Dream Baby Carrier has been our tried-and-true, everyday go-to this time around. We had a different Ergo for Maya but prefer the Dream way better. This is the one that comes with us everywhere. Grocery store runs, airport sprints, camping trips—this carrier has seen it all.
It’s incredibly comfortable, easy to adjust between Fonzie and me, and offers great support no matter how long we wear it. The breathable fabric helps keep things cool, which is especially important for us since we’re often adventuring in warm weather.
One of the things we love most is how versatile it is—newborn through toddler, front or back carry, it adapts to whatever stage we’re in. Ellie has practically lived in this thing. If we could only pick one soft-structured carrier, this would be it.

If we could only choose one carrier for all our adventures, the Omni Classic would be it.
What We Love:
- Grows with your child – Supports newborns (7 lbs) up to toddlers (45 lbs).
- Multiple carry positions – Front-inward, front-outward, hip, and back carry.
- Super soft fabric – Brushed cotton makes it extra cozy for both my kids and us as parents.
- Supportive & ergonomic – Padded straps and lumbar support make it great for long days on the go.
- Easy nursing access – A huge plus when traveling.
Worth it? Absolutely. If you need one solid carrier for travel and everyday use, this is a winner.

2. Embrace Knit Newborn Carrier – Perfect for the Early Days
The Embrace Knit Newborn Carrier was a lux to have while Ellie was a new born. I love how soft and cozy it feels—it’s almost like wrapping your baby in a hug. Unlike some other newborn wraps that can be intimidating with all the fabric, this one is structured just enough to make it easy to put on and adjust.
In those early newborn weeks, especially with Ellie, I found myself wearing this around the house constantly. It made it easy to keep her close while still chasing after Maya. And for travel? Absolute game-changer, especially in Maui. It was light and easy to throw in the diaper bag, perfect for navigating airports or soothing a fussy baby on the go.

What We Love:
- Soft & stretchy knit fabric – Feels like a gentle hug for newborns.
- No complicated wrapping – Clips on like a structured carrier but feels like a wrap.
- Lightweight & packable – Perfect for tossing in a diaper bag.
- Great for travel – Ideal for airports, road trips, and sightseeing.
Worth it? Yes—especially for the first six months when you want something soft, simple, and cozy.

3. Trail Magik – A Hiking Must-Have
The Trail Magik is such a simple but genius product, and it’s been a game-changer for our hikes. This little carrier attaches to the hip belt of a backpack, allowing us to quickly carry Maya when her legs get tired without having to bring a bulky carrier.
We started using this when she was around two and still needed occasional breaks on longer hikes. It’s lightweight, compact, and super easy to clip on when needed. Plus, Maya loves that she gets to ride on us without being completely strapped in. It’s not something we use all the time, but for certain trails, it’s been a lifesaver.
Check out the Trail Magik here.
What We Love:
- Super lightweight – Attaches to a standard backpack.
- Perfect for trail breaks – Quick up-and-down when little legs get tired.
- Compact & easy to pack – Weighs next to nothing.
- Holds up to 43 lbs – Great for toddlers who still need occasional carries.
Worth it? If you love hiking with toddlers, 100 percent yes—it makes life so much easier.
4. Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature – The Heavy-Duty Workhorse
When it comes to longer hikes or days when we need serious support, the Kelty Journey PerfectFIT Signature is our go-to. This is the carrier we take when we know one of the kids will be in and out of it all day. It’s built for comfort and durability, with an awesome suspension system that makes carrying a toddler for miles way easier than you’d think.
We first got this for Maya when she was around one, and now it’s Maya’s turn. It’s got plenty of storage, a sunshade (a must for desert hikes!), and great weight distribution, so it doesn’t kill our backs. It’s a bulkier option, so we don’t bring it on every trip, but for serious hiking days, it’s a no-brainer.
Final Thoughts
Each of these carriers has played a big role in different seasons of our adventures. The Omni Dream is our everyday staple, the Embrace was a lifesaver in those early newborn months, the Trail Magik keeps our hikes fun and flexible, and the Kelty is our workhorse for bigger outings. Depending on where we’re headed and what we’re doing, we always have at least one (if not two) packed and ready to go.
If you’re trying to decide on a carrier, it really depends on your lifestyle and needs. For us, having a mix has been key to making adventures with little ones easier and more enjoyable. Let us know if you have any questions—we love chatting about all things adventure parenting!
